How Far in Advance Should I Book a Wedding Photographer?

It’s one of the most common questions I get.
Planning your wedding in Nottingham, Derby or the East Midlands?
One of the first big decisions is when to book your wedding photographer. Instead of guesswork, here’s exactly when couples booked me, with real timelines and real weddings to show you how it plays out.
Short answer?
Earlier than you think.
Longer answer?
Usually, 12 to 24 months before your wedding date is average.
How Far In Advance Do Most Couples Book?
Most couples getting married book their wedding photographer between one and two years in advance.
Summer Saturdays go first. Then bank holidays.
If you’re planning a peak season wedding at a popular East Midlands venue, two years ahead is completely normal now.
Weekday and winter weddings can have a little more flexibility
There are only so many Saturdays in a year, and once a date is gone, it’s gone.

Why Do Wedding Photographers Book Up So Early?
Good question.
Most experienced wedding photographers limit the number of weddings they take on each year. It keeps quality high and burnout low. It means your wedding isn’t just another booking in a packed diary.
Now add in the fact that venues across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are hosting multiple weddings every weekend. Couples are all searching around the same time. Enquiries come in waves.
It’s a domino effect.
If You Love Them, Book Them
This bit matters more than timing.
If you’ve found a wedding photographer whose work makes you feel something.
If you can picture your own day in their photos.
If you feel comfortable chatting to them.
That’s your sign.
Don’t wait six months just because the wedding feels ages away. If they tick every box, secure them.
I’ve had couples enquire, disappear to “have a think”, then come back ready to book. Sometimes the date has already gone. It’s never a fun message to send, and I feel awful if their date has gone, but without a deposit, no date is fully secured.
Connection matters.
Your wedding photographer is with you for the nerves, the ceremony, the confetti, and and the chaos on the dance floor.
You want someone who keeps things calm and feels like a safe pair of hands.

What if my wedding is in 2027 or 2028?
Still enquire.
If your venue is booked and you’re organised, there’s no reason to wait. Booking your wedding photographer early just gives you peace of mind.
It’s one of the biggest investments of the day. Once it’s sorted, you can breathe.
And yes, I’m already booking weddings well into 2027 and 2028.
And if you find someone you genuinely love, don’t hang about.
Below are three completely different timelines. Two years in advance. Eighteen months ahead, and then moving the date forward. Six months before the big day.
The common thread? They booked as soon as they knew it felt right.
Sometimes that’s early and organised. Sometimes it’s quick and decisive. But in every case, the date was only secure because they didn’t wait once they’d made their minds up.
And that’s really the answer to how far in advance you should book your wedding photographer in Nottingham or Derby.
Sophie & George — booked May 2024, wedding Oct 2025

Sophie & George
Sophie and George first booked me on 18th May 2024.
Their original wedding date was 15th November 2026. Super organised. Plenty of time. All very sensible.
Then
In April 2025, mainly because of family reasons, they decided to bring the wedding forward. Quite a bit forward.
Their first choice of a new date, I wasnt availible. But they were determined to make it work, so they chose from the dates I still had available.
They ended up getting married on 26th October 2025 at Cockliffe Country House in Nottingham.
Earlier than planned. Different date. Same excitement.
It’s a perfect example of why booking early matters, and also why flexibility sometimes saves the day.
And honestly? Their new date suited them perfectly.

Danielle & Matthew — booked APRIL 2023,
wedding AUG 2025
Danielle & Matthew
Danielle and Matthew booked me back in April 2023.
Their wedding wasn’t until 2nd August 2025 at Newstead Abbey in Nottingham. Over two years away at the time. Properly organised.
They knew they’d secured their dream venue, and they didn’t want to risk missing out on the photographer they felt right about. So they booked early and ticked it off the list.
No stress. No watching dates disappear. Just peace of mind while they planned everything else.
Fast forward to August 2025, and they were married at the stunning Newstead Abbey, with sunshine, confetti and one very full dance floor.
It’s the perfect example of why booking your wedding photographer 18 to 24 months in advance in Nottingham isn’t over the top. It can be kind of normal.

Gaby & Jerome — booked FEb 2025, wedding AUG 2025

Gaby & Jerome
Gaby and Jerome booked me in February 2025.
Their wedding at Breadsall Priory was in August 2025. Just six months later.
Shorter timeline. Peak summer date. A little bit of “please still be available” energy.
Luckily, I was.
That’s the thing with booking, sometimes you’ll get lucky with availability closer to the date. Sometimes you won’t.
They moved quickly, secured their date, and that was it. No overthinking. No waiting around.
August rolled in, and they had the most gorgeous intimate summer wedding at Breadsall Priory.
Their story proves you can book six months out and it works beautifully.
But it only works if the date’s still there.

So… When Should You Book?
If you’re getting married in Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield or anywhere in the East Midlands, aim for around 12 to 24 months in advance; give yourself time to plan.
But more importantly, book as soon as you know they’re right for you.
The right photographer for your wedding won’t always be available later.
If you’ve got a date in mind and you’re wondering about availability, just ask. Even if it feels early.
Worst case, I’m booked, and I’ll always try to help.
Best case, your date’s secured, and that’s one big thing ticked off the list.
