Newborn mini photography session. What to Expect, From Start to Finish

MINI newborn session

A newborn baby lies on a white surface, looking up. Two adult hands gently hold the baby's hands, creating a sense of care and connection during a newborn photo session in my home studio in Mansfield.

The first few weeks with your baby are a complete blur

One minute you’re staring at them, thinking, how did we make something this perfect? The next time
you’re running on two hours of sleep, covered in milk, wondering what day it is.
It’s love. It’s overwhelming. It’s exhaustion. It’s gratitude. All at once.
You’ve got enough on your plate without trying to figure out how to “prepare” for a newborn photoshoot. So I’ve put everything you need to know in one place.

This guide walks you through exactly what happens, how to prep for the studio, what the session feels like, and what comes next.
No guesswork. No stress.
My job isn’t just to take photos. It’s to make this feel calm, easy, and actually enjoyable.
Because these early days fly by. And they deserve more than a rushed phone snap.
If you know what to expect, you can relax. And when you relax, everything just flows better.
That’s what this is for.

When your mini newborn session takes place

Mini newborn sessions usually take place under 8 weeks after your baby is born.
They’re perfect if you don’t have the time, budget, or energy for a full 3-hour-plus newborn session, but still want beautiful professional photos of this tiny stage.
No complicated prep. No long stretches. Just gorgeous, natural newborn photos in under an hour.

Short. Sweet. Beautifully simple.

Why choose a mini newborn session?

Mini sessions are perfect if:

  • You want beautiful, professional newborn photos
  • You’re working to a budget
  • You don’t want a long session
  • Your baby is slightly older
  • You simply prefer something short and simple

These sessions last up to 60 minutes, depending on the option you choose. They’re focused, relaxed, and designed to capture your baby safely and beautifully without needing them to be in a deep sleep.

What happens during a mini session?

Mini sessions are kept intentionally simple.
Your baby will be photographed:
☆ Wrapped
☆ Clothed
☆ Or in a nappy
I mainly photograph babies wrapped or lying comfortably on their back.
It’s the safest and easiest way to work within a shorter session, and it still creates timeless images.
We don’t attempt lots of complex poses or multiple prop changes. That’s what full sessions are for.
That said, there’s still room for a little creativity. If you’d love something specific, like a cute themed outfit, we can usually include one simple setup as long as time allows.

The key with minis is keeping everything smooth and calm.

Before You Arrive

Mini newborn sessions are designed to be simple, so prep is nice and easy.
If you can, try to feed your baby just before you leave home. A settled baby helps us make the most of our time.
Please bring:
☆ Milk
☆ Nappies
☆ A dummy if your baby uses one
☆ A spare outfit (most of mine are for new, newborns, so won’t fit)
That’s all you need.
Dress the baby in something easy to remove (if we need to) so we’re not disturbing them too much when we get started.
☆ No vest on, please, so we can just slip the romper suit down.
Simple outfits without tight socks are ideal to avoid marks on their skin.
The studio will be warm and cosy, so dress comfortably. If you’re including family photos in Mini Collection One, neutral tones always photograph beautifully.
Most importantly, arrive knowing this is meant to feel easy. We keep things calm, efficient, and relaxed from start to finish.

Do they need to be asleep?

No.
One of the biggest differences with a mini session is that your baby doesn’t need to be in a deep sleep.
Because we’re focusing on wrapped and natural positions, we can capture beautiful images whether they’re snoozing or quietly awake.

Can siblings or parents be included?

This depends on the collection you choose.
Mini Collection One
Up to 60 minutes
5 digital images, chosen by you
If time allows at the end of the session, siblings or parents can be included. We keep these simple and relaxed.
Mini Collection Two
Up to 30 minutes
2 digital images, chosen by me
This option is baby only.
No siblings.
No parents.
No pets.

Because the session is shorter, we stay fully focused on baby to make sure we use the time we

After your mini session.
What happens next?

With Mini Collection Two, I carefully select your two strongest images, fully edit them, and send them directly to you.
With Mini Collection One, you’ll be invited back to the studio around 1 to 2 weeks later for your viewing appointment. You’ll see your gallery, with a few images fully edited and the rest lightly edited, so you can choose calmly without feeling rushed.
Your deposit is deducted from your final balance. You can pay in full at your viewing appointment or pay a minimum of 50%, with the remaining balance due when everything is ready.
Once you’ve chosen your favourite images, please allow up to three weeks for your final, fully edited gallery to be delivered.

You’re welcome to purchase additional images or products if you fall in love with more, but there’s never any pressure.
Sneak peeks may be shared on social media unless you’ve requested privacy.

A final word

Is a mini session right for you?
If you’re dreaming of lots of setups, detailed posing, and a full family experience, a full newborn session is likely the better fit.

If you’d love a handful of beautiful images without committing to a longer session, a mini is ideal.
Simple. Relaxed. Done beautifully.
If you’re unsure which suits you best, just ask. I’m always happy to talk it through with you and help you decide what fits your plans and your budget best.
If you’ve got any questions at all before your session, just shout. No question is too small.

Newborn Session Q and A

I would never force one of our tiny models to use a dummy. That’s completely your call.
However, speaking from experience, there can be moments where a dummy saves the day and helps baby settle quickly between poses.
It can make the session smoother and calmer for everyone.
If your baby already uses one, please bring it along.
If you’re unsure, you can always use one just for the session and then pop it in the bin afterwards.
No judgement either way. You know your baby best.

Mini Collection One lasts up to 60 minutes.
Mini Collection Two lasts up to 30 minutes.

We work efficiently, but calmly. Minis are shorter by design, so we keep setups simple and smooth.

TNo.

That’s one of the lovely things about minis. Because we focus on wrapped or natural lying poses, we can capture beautiful images whether baby is snoozing or quietly awake.

Less pressure. More flexibility.

Only with Mini Collection One, and only if time allows at the end of the session.

Mini Collection Two is baby only. No siblings, parents, or pets, as the shorter time is fully focused on your newborn.

If sibling photos are really important to you, a full newborn session may be the better option.

Again, this depends on the collection.

Mini Collection One may allow time for a couple of simple parent shots at the end.

Mini Collection Two is baby only.

We keep everything straightforward so we don’t rush or squeeze too much in.

Minis are kept simple.

We won’t have time for multiple elaborate setups or complex posing. The focus is on clean, timeless images using wraps, simple props, and natural positions.

If you’re wanting a larger variety, a full newborn session would suit you better.

If you book a mini and later decide you’d prefer the full newborn experience, just let me know as early as possible. If diary space allows, we can upgrade your session.

Mini Collection One includes 5 digital images, chosen by you.

Mini Collection Two includes 2 digital images, chosen by me.

You’ll always have the option to purchase additional images if you fall in love with more.

If you’d love a small selection of beautiful, professional newborn photos without a long session, yes.

If you want lots of variety, sibling time, parent portraits, and a slower pace, a full newborn session is probably the better fit.

If you’re unsure, just ask. As some poses can’t be achieved in a mini session.
I’d rather help you choose the right session than have you second-guess later.

If you’re still unsure about anything, just ask.
I’d much rather answer a small question now than have you worrying about it later.
