Congratulations on your engagement!
Do’s + dont’s choosing a wedding photographer?
Now that you’ve set a date, you’re likely starting to plan your wedding, and one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing a photographer to capture your special day. After all, your wedding photos will be cherished memories for years to come.
To help you make the best choice possible, here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when choosing a wedding photographer.
DO:
Ask for referrals and read reviews:
Start by asking friends, family, and other vendors for referrals. You can also browse online review sites like Bridebook or The Hitched to see what others have to say about their experiences with local photographers. Look for photographers with consistently positive reviews and a style that matches your vision.
DON’T:
Rely solely on price:
While it’s important to stick to your budget, don’t make price the only factor in your decision.
Cheaper isn’t always better, and you’ll likely get what you pay for. Consider the photographer’s experience, skill, and personality when making your decision.
DO:
Meet in person or via video chat:
It’s important to meet your photographer in person or via video chat if you can before hiring them to ensure you feel comfortable with them and that they understand your vision.
This is also a good opportunity to see more of their work and ask any questions you may have.
If you can’t then please give them a call hearing their voice and allowing them to explain things is key, you can get a feel for someone over the phone too.
DON’T:
Assume all photographers have the same style:
Every photographer has their own style and approach to capturing weddings. Take some time to browse through their portfolio to see if their style matches your vision for your wedding day.
If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, ask the photographer to show you examples of their work that align with your preferences.
DO:
Review their contract and ask questions:
Before signing a contract with your chosen photographer, review it carefully and ask any questions you may have.
Make sure you understand the fees, what’s included in the package, and the photographer’s cancellation policy.
DON’T:
Wait until the last minute:
Good photographers book up quickly, so don’t wait until the last minute to start your search.
Aim to book your photographer at least six to twelve months before your wedding date to ensure availability. Sometimes I can take a booking two years in advance.
DO:
Have fun and be yourself:
On your wedding day, have fun and be yourself!
The best photos come when you’re relaxed and enjoying yourself.
Trust your photographer to capture the moments that matter most and be open to their creative suggestions.
DO:
Ask about their backup plan:
Wedding photography is a one-time opportunity, and you don’t want anything to go wrong on your big day. Ask the photographer about their backup plan in case of equipment failure, illness, or any other unforeseen circumstance.
A professional photographer will have a backup camera, extra memory cards, and a plan for how to handle unexpected situations. Knowing that your photographer is prepared will give you peace of mind on your wedding day.
IN CONCLUSION
Choosing a wedding photographer can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.
By keeping these dos and don’ts in mind, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect photographer to capture your special day.
Remember to take your time, do your research, and trust your instincts.
Happy planning!
